The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) has launched a brand-new publication as part of its celebrations for the bicentenary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.
The new careers-focused publication, Innovations, People and Practice (IPP), will supplement AfPP’s internationally respected peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Perioperative Practice (JPP).
Whilst the JPP publishes the latest clinical research and topical discussions on patient safety, IPP will publish news of innovations and features offering advice on perioperative career progression and improve wellbeing.
As the UK’s leading membership organisation for theatre practitioners, AfPP is committed to enhancing skills and knowledge within the perioperative environment.
The new IPP is in line with its mission to support theatre practitioners throughout their entire careers, offering advice, and guidance on how to deal with some of the most common operating theatre challenges.
The inaugural issue was made available to the association’s 7000+ perioperative members plus industry specialists in early January.
This issue features an interview exploring the day-to-day life of an ODP student, as well as a competition offering the chance to win a family ticket to the Florence Nightingale Museum.
The 20-page supplement also features an interview with a clinical consultant from one of the world’s largest medical tech companies – BD, and advice on dealing with imposter syndrome from a respected confidence coach, Jules Wyman, who has appeared on BBC Breakfast and spoken twice at past AfPP conferences.
Carolina Britton, associate editor for the Journal of Perioperative Practice said: “As an organisation, we want to further unite the entire perioperative workforce, promoting best practice across all departments and encouraging all professions to work together to create a positive culture.
“The IPP comes to life as we enter a new decade to do precisely this. It populates a universe of common interests, mutual pursuits and shared challenges between perioperative care practitioners.
“There could be no better year than 2020 for the IPP to be born in; the first ever International Year of the Nurse and Midwife and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.
“We see the first issue of IPP as a rolling invitation to celebrate all that nurses, midwives, and AHPs do to improve the patient’s journey.”

The IPP will be available to AfPP members, non-members and perioperative professionals throughout the industry, in both print and digital formats. It will be published 10 times a year and will focus on innovation, people and practice as well as specialist areas.
