Following a decision by the Founding Council, membership has now been extended so non-medical full members of UK medical royal colleges and faculties can now join FMLM. The numbers now excede 1,700 members. We have also introduced a retired category for doctors. Individuals, who have an interest in medical leadership but do not qualify for membership, can become Associates of the FMLM. This is in response to requests through membership research and from medical Royal Colleges; encouragingly, we have also had many requests from individuals outside the medical profession.
Leadership and management skills are becoming increasingly important in order to empower clinical professionals to improve service provision and patient care as well as helping their own development and career progression.
Being a member or associate of FMLM can help individuals with an interest in medical leadership make the most of their leadership and management responsibilities through networking opportunities, information and resource sharing facilities, advocacy support and help to find professional development opportunities.
Commenting on the FMLM Membership extension, Peter Lees said:
“In our early membership research, there was a clear desire expressed for the Faculty to move towards being more multi-professional. There are many ways of doing this and the new membership categories are a great step forward which will enrich FMLM through a more diverse membership whilst ensuring that we do not lose our fundamental remit to drive and support continuous improvement in medical leadership.”
