Relaxation app scoops prize for innovation in AAGBI awards

The annual prize for Innovation in Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain has been awarded to Peter Brooks, consultant anaesthetist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, for the development of tablet-based software to reduce child patient anxiety during anaesthetic procedures. The Relax Anaesthetics App suggests games and music to distract children during anaesthetic procedures and aims to save time before operations, reduce anaesthetic drug costs and provide a better experience for anxious children and their parents.

The award is given by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) and was presented by AAGBI president Andrew Hartle it the association’s winter meeting held in London in January.

Commenting on the award, Hartle said: “This low cost approach, using familiar technology to make it easier to administer anaesthesia to children and reduces parental stress is to be welcomed.”

Winning the award allows the product or idea to be showcased before medical equipment manufacturers and will help with funds towards testing and marketing.
